Why is the Queen inspirational?
By Reewa Bennett
I believe the Queen’s death has really drawn in how valued she was in this country and around the world. Not everyone is a Royalist but almost everyone loves the Queen.
So, what made her…. inspirational?

"I declare before you all that my whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be devoted to your service and the service of our great imperial family to which we all belong
Speech on The Queen’s 21st birthday, 21st April 1947, broadcast from Cape Town.

Well, the Queen has lived through a lot: A World War, a global pandemic, and the economy rising and falling. She has lived through 15 British Prime Ministers (Winston Churchill was Prime Minister when she was crowned) and 13 US Presidents. Through all that The Queen was our one standing point - a pillar for Britain to lean on.

This, combined with her wisdom, has always made her a safe person to rely on. Regardless of the situation, the Queen never failed to lend some aid accompanied by her fashionable sense of humour as well.

When the Queen died a piece of history died with her.

The Queen also never took herself too seriously despite her prestigious background. She agreed to do a segment during the London Olympics in 2012 where she “jumped out of a plane” along with James Bond. She also poked fun at her own Royal Gardens when on a walk around with David Attenborough who noticed a sundial built to be in the shade! Her love of corgis is also so wholesome for a dog-loving nation like Britain. In fact, during the Queen’s reign, she owned more than 30 corgis.

On a more serious note, she also helped the war effort by being a truck mechanic so it is humbling to see how the Queen is not afraid to get her hands dirty!

Another factor that makes the Queen so loved is how she always remained by her core values. During Brexit, a time of great divide in our country, she reminded everyone about how important common values and kindnesses are.

“Of course, every generation faces fresh challenges and opportunities. As we look for new answers in the modern age, I for one prefer the tried and tested recipes, like speaking well of each other and respecting different points of view; coming together to seek out the common ground; and never losing sight of the bigger picture. To me, these approaches are timeless, and I commend them to everyone.”

The Queen was very unpolitical - never taking sides and always holding her head high. Although coming to the throne unexpectedly, at the age of 25, she has always risen to the challenge.

There have been several TV series tributing the Royal Family and what might have happened behind the scenes. The Queen has been depicted in The Queen where she was portrayed by Helen Mirren and in the Emmy-winning Netflix series The Crown.

Britain is an incredibly old Country with incredibly old traditions and Queen Elizabeth was one of only eight female rulers. In a way, The Queen was the first modern ruler Britain's ever had – her coronation was televised though her parents had been very Victorian.

“The ceremonies you have seen today are ancient, and some of their origins are veiled in the mists of the past. But their spirit and their meaning shine through the ages never, perhaps, more brightly than now.”

Overall, The Queen always put her values first and never let her power or position get to her. Her sense of humour was unmatched and her wisdom and grace were always apparent. She spoke not just from her heart, but from the heart of the country.

That is why The Queen was inspirational.
